Discussion is an INSTRUCTIONAL strategy that involves students sharing ideas about a common topic.
LESSON PLANS AND REFLECTIONS
The first lesson plan that I found for the discussion model was about stereotypes. This lesson was very good because it called for a lot of discussion between the students while opening them up to new vocabulary. One part of the lesson that I found interesting was where the students were asked to group themselves by similar visual characteristics. During the lesson the main topic was that no two people are alike and that every one is unique in their own way. This lesson plan did not deviate from the discussion model; therefore making it a good representation. If I were to use this lesson in my classroom I would bring in different shaped cookie cutters to show that not one thing is alike.
The second lesson plan that uses the discussion model was a language arts lesson. The title of the lesson is Developing a Living Definition of Reading. I thought that is lesson had many strengths, one being the amount of critical thinking that the students had to do. This lesson plan had a lot of discussion; however it deviated from the discussion model because the lesson was over a series of 3 sessions. I liked how the teacher incorporated the group thinking and wanted the students to work together. I think this with would help students in younger grades because of their maturity level. If I used this lesson plan in my classroom, I would be sure to incorporate the last part of the lesson. At the end of the school year I would ask the students if their definition of reading had changed or stayed the same. |

REFLECTION ON IN-CLASS PRESENTATION
Secondary Discussion Implementation
- The secondary group that implemented the discussion model in the classroom did a good job engaging the students. In high-school many teachers do not have lessons where students interact with one another, and the student teachers really wanted the students to talk through and understand the topic they were teaching. I feel like they followed the discussion model well, with a very good debate about men vs. women. One weakness that I found was that both the students teachers did not have equal talking time during the lesson. If there was a little more collaboration and planning that weakness would have been easily fixed.
