Direct instruction is a model that uses teacher demonstration and explanation combined with student practice and feedback to help learners acquire well-defined knowledge and skills needed for later learning.
LESSON PLANS AND REFLECTIONS
The first direct instruction lesson plan that I found was about improper fraction and equivalent mixed the numbers. The teacher starts by shows the student how to convert improper fractions to mixed numbers. Then the students are given a worksheet to work with guided help from the teacher, and then a separate worksheet for independent practice. This lesson plan follows the model exactly. If I were to use this lesson plan in my classroom, I would not ask the students what they would tell the principle if he/she asked how well they liked the lesson. I feel like that is not relevant to the lesson. I would do a review of the material that was taught that day.
The second direct instruction lesson plan that I found was a 3rd grade lesson on telling time. This lesson also follows the direct instruction model exactly. The teacher provided the students with many examples to create a better understanding of telling time. I like that the lesson plan is very clear in its procedures, and that everything for the lesson is included within the lesson plan. I plan to use this lesson plan in my classroom because I think it is an effective lesson on telling time. |

REFLECTION ON IN-CLASS PRESENTATION
Elementary Direct Instruction Implementation
- The elementary group that implemented the direct instruction model did a overall good job with the lesson. I liked how they had multiple examples to help the students with the math problems. The only part the deviated from the model was that they had to help the students during the independent practice phase, but if the students did not understand the material then I think that it is appropriate to help them have a firm understanding. I feel that the group planned very well and that came across while they were teaching.
- The secondary group taught a math lesson. I feel that this lesson could have been planned better, and I would have liked it better if the student teacher could have taught from the front of the classroom. The lesson was not very engaging for the students; however the student teacher was knowledgeable with his content that was being taught, and he did follow the direct instruction model.
